MTV is located on the site of the original business founded by Douglas Lewin Thornton, known locally and affectionately as 'Lewin'. At that time, in 1966, the business title was, D.Lewin Thornton, Trading as Marown Television & Radio Services. The Company continued trading under this name and as it grew and vans were purchased they carried this name on the livery.

Lewin, a fully skilled Radio & TV engineer, initially worked alone, carrying out Radio and Television repairs from a 'backroom' of what was the local Post Office and Grocery shop, but was also the family home for the Lewins. From this Lewin had been given his name, as it was his mother's maiden name. Eventually as he developed and expanded the business, he employed staff and bought vehicles to offer not just an excellent personal service, but also to deliver rental sets. At this time renting Televisions to customers was something new and was only in its infancy. As this expansion took place Lewin needed more space, by now he had already changed the Grocery shop and Post Office into a Radio & Television shop, but he had also set up a workshop in the building which was at the rear, which had originally been his Grandfather's workshop, as he was the local Smithy. This building has since been lost to the continued expansion of MTV and on-going need for more showroom and storage space.

Marown Television & Radio Services (1975)

Lewin sadly lost his wife but despite this massive set back, and his own physical disabilities, he persued his goal of continued expansion. Lewin re-married, then in 1973 invited his step son-in-law to join him. Dave Leatherbarrow brought with him a wealth of experience from office administration & management to having worked in the wholesale electrical industry plus having a background of selling.

A few years later after considerable development and planning, Marown Television was given an overhaul, including a name change to Marown TV Ltd. The next few years was to see a substantial growth in Marown TV Ltd, as Colour Television became more widely available following the installation of local Television Relay Stations, providing a picture quality unknown before. As Lewin had done in the past, with Dave at his side, they together progressed the Television Rental part of the business, which was to expand again with the introduction of Video Recorders, another product for the rental customers. Further building expansion was necessary, walls were knocked down and extensions added, including an extra display window. By now, many of Marown TV's customers were requesting their chosen retailer to supply them with 'White Goods', Fridges, mainly, then Washing Machines and Cookers. A little time after this, Marown TV offered, as part of their 'special kind of service', credit facilities for their 'special kind of customers'. This facility continues today.

Sadly Lewin's health had started to fail and gradually it became Dave's responsibility to continue the running and development and, eventually alone. Marown TV continued it's growth and expansion, with a further extension and additional display window as the sales of White goods blossomed.

During September 2001 Dave, with the help and support of his staff and son Richard, took the step of re-developing the showrooms yet again, changing fixed display areas into concept areas with new lighting and new counter. The aim has been to create display areas with an atmosphere 'very much more relaxed and homely', this has proved to be a hit with the 'very special customers' who visit. It was also decided to orchestrate these changes to coincide with a re-launch of the company under it's now well known, MTV livery.

Soon after he had taken over the solo development of Marown TV, Dave siezed an opportunity for Marown TV to become a member of an Independant Buying Group, which today, has an enormous warehouse in Andover where MTV is able to purchase not only the bulk of their product range, but also some extremely price sensative products and some extra special deals. These enable MTV to offer some amazing prices. Add to this, their direct accounts with such major manufacturers as Sony, Philips, Miele, Bosch, Electrolux, then this is why MTV can offer amazing products as well!

The electrical retailing industry is not the dry and boring trade it may have appeared in the past!
